Infective endocarditis in a child caused by Cardiobacterium hominis after right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction using an expanded tetrafluoroethylene conduit

Abstract: Cardiobacterium hominis, a member of the HACEK group of organisms, is a rare cause of endocarditis. We report a case of infective endocarditis caused by C. hominis in a male child who had undergone right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reconstruction using an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene conduit for tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. Two days before admission, the patient suffered from exertional shortness of breath. Right ventricular hypertension was confirmed and RVOT stenosis was suspected bas… Show more

“…[2] Cardiobacterium hominis is a member of the HACEK ( Haemophilus sp., Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans , C. hominis , Eikenella corrodens , and Kingella kingae ) group commonly associated with endocarditits and is normally present in the oropharynx andtherespiratory tract. [3] To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of C. hominis dacryocystitis.…”

“…In addition, 2 children with Fallot tetralogy and C. hominis endocarditis have been reported, one a 5-year-old male who had undergone a right ventricular reconstruction, and the other a 7-year-old female who had a Blalock-Taussing shunt operation. 4,5 Predisposing factors for C. hominis endocarditis include previous valve replacement, rheumatic heart disease, structural cardiac abnormalities and procedures such as mouth interventions and gastrointestinal endoscopy or colonoscopy. Bacteremia by C. hominis without endocarditis has been reported in 3 adults: 2 had an underlying adenocarcinoma and 1 had a pacemaker lead infection and vertebral osteomyelitis.…”
