Infectious diseases surveillance activities in the North of Portugal, during the EURO 2004 football tournament

Abstract: A European football tournament (EURO 2004) took place in Portugal, from the 12 June to the 4 July 2004. Portugal’s Northern Regional Health Authority serves a population of 3.2 million people. This region hosted 12 matches, more than any other region. “…In susceptible populations, the pharyngeal colonisation of pathogens may contribute to serious bacterial infections, including pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis [5] . Localised meningococcal outbreaks and their further dissemination have been linked to international travel, migration, attendance at Hajj and participation in sporting events [6][7][8][9][10][11] . Intercontinental spread of serogroup A meningococcal disease in 1987 affected thousands of Hajj pilgrims globally; mandating bivalent meningococcal (A and C) vaccine for all Hajj pilgrims helped with disease control [7] .…”

“…This absence of evidence of any increase in overall infectious disease events is consistent with the findings from other event surveillance reports. At the EURO 2004 football tournament in Portugal, no visitors were found to be affected by infectious disease outbreaks, and the number of outbreaks in the local population did not exceed expected values based on data from the preceding 3 years [16]. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, the number of infectious disease notifications was in line with the numbers from the preceding and following years [17].…”

“…56 A large 2004 European football tournament review found similar results. 21 Of the communicable diseases reported during the event, no visitors were affected, and Portugal's residents were not influenced. 21 Respiratory viruses are easily spread among groups of people, but with some simple precautions, their spread can be stopped or at least significantly reduced.…”

“…21 Of the communicable diseases reported during the event, no visitors were affected, and Portugal's residents were not influenced. 21 Respiratory viruses are easily spread among groups of people, but with some simple precautions, their spread can be stopped or at least significantly reduced. A systematic review of the effectiveness of physical interventions at reducing the spread of respiratory viruses found that frequent handwashing, >10 times per day, was effective 55% of the time in interrupting virus spread.…”
