Infection of Dice Snake (Reptilia, Colubridae) with Larvae of Eustrongylides excisus (Nematoda, Dioctophymatidae) in the Middle and Lower Dnipro River Basin

Abstract: Dice snakes can be a paratenic host for a stage IV of Eustrongylides excisus, Jägerskiöld, 1909 larva due to specific diet of the snakes. The infection rate of E. excisus in Natrix tessellata (Laurenti, 1768) was studied in the basin of the middle and the lower Dnipro River in 2013–2017. We searched for nematodes in snakes from four sites: Prydniprovska Thermal Power Station, Majorova Balka, Zaporizhzhia; National Nature Park Velykyi Luh. The snakes from all studied areas had high prevalence of infection (more… Show more

“…People have long been using the resource potential of the deltas to develop industry, transport, agricultural and fishing economies, for recreation, etc. (Yermolenko et al, 2022;Yesipova et al, 2022). Over the recent decades, special attention was paid to complex studies of delta ecosystems, and currently the focus is on the control of anthropogenic impact and quality of ecosystem services.…”

“…The basis of dirofilariasis diagnostics consists of complex analysis of epizootiological data, clinical symptoms, pathoanatomic changes, and results of laboratory tests (Strickland, 1998;Hoch & Strickland, 2008;Romano et al, 2021;Yermolenko et al, 2022). In particular, hemolarvascopy is used, which is based on blood testing via several methods of different efficacy, which can be ineffective in case of presence of immature nematodes in the organism of the definitive host (Magnis et al, 2013;Ionica et al, 2017;Genchi et al, 2021).…”
