Infection of Anopheles aquasalis from symptomatic and asymptomatic Plasmodium vivax infections in Manaus, western Brazilian Amazon

Abstract: BackgroundAsymptomatic individuals are one of the major challenges for malaria elimination programs in endemic areas. In the absence of clinical symptoms and with a lower parasite density they constitute silent reservoirs considered important for maintaining transmission of human malaria. Studies from Brazil have shown that infected individuals may carry these parasites for long periods.ResultsPatients were selected from three periurban endemic areas of the city of Manaus, in the western Brazilian Amazon. Symp… Show more

“…According to a census carried out by the field team before the beginning of the study, approximately 2,400 inhabitants were living in the study area, of around 72 km 2 . The general characteristics of these communities were previously described [ 28 , 29 ].…”

“…The question arises, whether these low-density infections carry gametocytes in su cient numbers to contribute to onward transmission to mosquitoes. This question has been addressed by previous studies at all three sites, either by membrane feeding assays on symptomatic blood samples [20,21] or by using gametocyte density as surrogate for transmission potential, such as in a study recently performed in the same community in PNG, where gametocytes were quanti ed after enrichment from large volumes of blood [12]. In this recent study, more than half of the P. falciparumand P. vivaxpositive samples that were only detected by us-qPCR, carried gametocytes, (10 gametocyte carriers in 15 P. falciparum-infections and 11 gametocyte carriers in 19 P. vivax-infections) [12].…”
