Infection by Platynosomum illiciens (= P. fastosum) in domestic cats of Araguaína, Tocantins, northern Brazil

Abstract: Platynosomiasis is a hepatopathy caused by Platynosomum illiciens(= P. fastosum) (Trematoda: Dicrocoelidae), which occurs mainly in domestic and wild cats in tropical and subtropical areas. The objective of this study was to verify the occurrence of P. illiciens infection in domestic cats in the city of Araguaína, Tocantins, Brazil, using necropsy and coproparasitological tests. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate the use of two different techniques to diagnose P. illiciens infection in domestic cats and verify… Show more

“…Furthermore, there were no statistically significant associations between other clinical signs and the presence of Platynosomum infection (p > 0.05). These findings are consistent with several previous studies [11,28,30]. Therefore, the difference in the estimated prevalence of Platynosomum infection in this study compared to others in Thailand may be attributed to the fact that all cats in this study had elevated serum ALT levels, suggesting problems in the hepatobiliary system that pose a high risk for platynosomiasis.…”

“…prevalence that we found is probably due to the small number of livers available for our study. In addition, although we detected eggs of trematodes by coprological analysis, we are probably underestimating the prevalence of flukes, since the sensitivity of coprological techniques is lower than the detection of trematode specimens by necropsy, especially in the case of liver flukes (Sithithaworn et al 1991 ; Sobral et al 2019 ). The prevalence of Brachylaima spp.…”

“…The difference between the frequencies must have been due to the method used for diagnosis and the intermittent elimination of eggs (Lima et al, 2021a). It is necessary to emphasize the importance of infection by this parasite in the health of cats, because clinical changes can range from asymptomatic to severe liver changes (Sobral et al, 2019). These results indicate veterinarians should include this parasitosis as a differential diagnosis and perform preventive diagnoses and proper deworming.…”
