Infected cephalohematoma of newborns: Experience in a medical center in Taiwan

“…As infected SGH is rare, antibiotic treatment and duration have not been well documented. The initial empiric antibiotic treatment should cover a wide range of most probable pathogens, and combination of a third generation cephalosporin with metronidazol could be proposed [3]. Guided by the culture and susceptibility testing, antibiotic regimen can be switched.…”

“…If an underlying osteomyelitis or abscess is present then surgical debridement is needed. 7 Antibiotics can be narrowed once cultures have grown an organism. However, the majority of these patients require extended courses of antibiotics especially in cases of meningitis.…”

“…When Staphylococcus aureus is the bacteriaresponsible for the infection, Vancomicin therapy should be started and continued for four weeks or more. Once diagnosed, if there is no spontaneous drainage, the infected cepahlohematoma should be incised and drained and, if underlying osteomyelitis or epidural abscess are found, surgical debridement should be performed (14)(15)(16)(17).…”
