BackgroundHealthcare-associated infections (HAIs) have a major impact on public health worldwide. Particularly, hospital surfaces contaminated with bacterial pathogens are often the origin of both sporadic cases and outbreaks of HAIs. It has been demonstrated that copper surfaces reduce the microbial burden of high touch surfaces in the hospital environment. Here we report the antimicrobial characterization of a novel composite coating with embedded copper particles, named Copper Armour™.MethodsThe Copper Armour™ bactericidal activity was evaluated in in vitro assays against several bacterial pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes. Additionally, its antimicrobial properties were also evaluated in a pilot study over a nine-week period at an adult intensive care unit. For this, four high touch surfaces, including bed rails, overbed table, bedside table and IV Pole, were coated with Cooper Armour™, and its microbial burden was determined over a nine-week period.ResultsCopper Armour™ coated samples showed an in vitro reduction in bacterial burden of > 99.9% compared to control samples. Moreover, pilot study results indicate that Copper Armour™ significantly reduces the level of microbial contamination on high-touch surfaces in the hospital environment, as compared with standard surfaces.ConclusionsBased on its antimicrobial properties, Copper Armour™ is a novel self-sanitizing coating that exhibits bactericidal activity against important human pathogens and significantly reduces the microbial burden of hospital surfaces. This composite could be used as a self-sanitizing coating to complement infection control strategies in healthcare facilities.

Background: Health Care Associated Infections (HAIs) present high rates in Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units worldwide and in the Pediatric, Cardiothoracic and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (ICU) of the Baca Pediatric Hospital. Ortiz, -Ecuador. The microorganisms that cause HAIs increase morbidity and mortality in ICUs. They present bacterial resistance that the World Health Organization aims to eliminate. Objective: Determine the microorganisms causing HAIs and bacterial resistance in the Pediatric, Cardiothoracic and Neonatal Intensive Units of the Baca Ortiz Pediatric Hospital Materials and Methods: Observational, Descriptive, Retrospective and documentary design lasting one year. The results were obtained through the epidemiology and infection control department. Results: A sample of 1,188 patients was obtained, 228 total Health Care Associated Infections (119 in the Pediatric and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Units and 34 Neonatal Intensive Care Units), with a sample validity of 99%. We determined the microorganisms that cause HAIs, the microorganism with the highest frequency of recovery is Klebsiella pneumoniae ESBL (extended spectrum ß-lactamases). Bacterial resistance to antibiotics was determined, of the microorganisms Klebsiella pneumoniae (63.9%) and Pseudomona aeroginosa (44.3%) resistant to Carbapenems. Multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (35.6%). Discussion: the microorganisms present in Neonatal Pediatric Intensive Care Units are present in a higher percentage than those determined worldwide. Bacterial resistance occurs in low-spectrum antibiotics. Conclusion: The microorganism causing HAIs in ICUs predominates Klebsiella pneumoniae ESBL. The measures used in ICUs must be aimed at controlling multidrug-resistant bacteria and eliminating them.

Aim of the present study is comparative evaluation of the inherent antimicrobial properties of the copper and stainless steel suction tube also evaluate bacterial adherence and reduction with time within the suction tube. Present study was performed in an in vitro setting in Saveetha dental college and hospital. Both the metals suction tubes were cut into equal lengths of 2.3 inches and dipped in a sterile container for 5 minutes which had bacterial suspension of Streptococcus Mutans. Each group included three samples of copper and stainless steel suction tubes. Control group was taken out at 0 mins post initial dipping period de-coated in a sterile container and immediately cultured on Brain heart infusion agar, followed by group 1 at 15 minutes group 2 at 60 minutes and group 3 at 180 minutes respectively. Bacterial colonies were counted after overnight incubation. Copper suction tubes demonstrated less initial adhesion of bacterial colonies than that of stainless steel suction tubes. Percentage reduction in bacterial colonies was observed more in stainless steel suction tubes with respect to time. Spite of high initial adhesion stainless steel suction tube demonstrated higher degree of percentage reduction in bacterial colonies with time hence proven better for antimicrobial properties than copper suction tube.
