The development of bimanual actions reflects perceptual, motor and cognitive processes, as well as the functional connectivity between brain hemispheres. We investigated the development of uni- and bimanual actions in typically-developing (TD) infants and infants with Down syndrome (DS) while they reached for objects with varying sizes. Eight TD infants and seven infants with DS (ages 4 to 8 months) were tested at several stages of reaching experience. Movement strategies at movement initiation, object touching and grasping were recorded. With reaching experience, typical infants increased ability to anticipate reaching strategies, and independent use of the hands according to task demands. Strategies used by infants with DS were mostly compensatory rather than anticipatory, and showed a weaker tendency for interlimb coupling at early ages. These differences may underlie functional limitations, and should be subject to early intervention.

STRESZCZENIECel pracy. Celem podjętych badań było dokonanie analizy rozwoju psychoruchowego dzieci z zespołem Downa systematycznie stymulowanych metodą Vojty, zarówno w warunkach domowych, jak i w Poradni Rehabilitacji przy UDSK w Białym-stoku przez terapeutę oraz porównanie uzyskanych wyników z grupą dzieci z zespołem Downa, które były sporadycznie stymulowane metodą Vojty. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono na grupie 45 dzieci z zespołem Downa w wieku od 18. do 24. miesiąca życia. W celu oceny rozwoju psychomotorycznego wykorzystano Profil Psychoedukacyjny PEP-R, który dostarczył informacji na temat rozwoju umiejętności naśladowania, percepcji, motoryki małej i dużej, koordynacji wzrokowo-ruchowej, czynności poznawczych, komunikacji oraz zachowania. W celu dokładniejszej analizy rozwoju psychomotorycznego badanej grupy dzieci z zespołem Downa skorzystano z Inwentarza PPAC Gunzburga, który oceniał kompetencje społeczne w następujących kryteriach: samoobsługa, uspołecznie-nie, zręczność (sprawność manualna i kontrola motoryki) oraz komunikacja. Na drugim etapie badań dokonano podziału na dwie podgrupy; dzieci systematycznie stymulowane metodą Vojty (minimum 3 razy dziennie w warunkach domowych oraz minimum 2 razy tygodniowo w warunkach poradnianych przez terapeutę), druga grupa to dzieci sporadycznie stymulowane metodą Vojty. Następnie dokonano analizy porównawczej rozwoju psychoruchowego obu grup. Wyniki. Dzieci z zespołem Downa systematycznie stymulowane metodą Vojty osiągały wiek siadania, czworakowania i chodzenia o około 2 miesiące wcześniej. Różnica w wykonaniu zadań z zakresu samoobsługi, komunikacji, uspołecznienia i zręczności była istotna statystycznie na korzyść dzieci z zespołem Downa systematycznie stymulowanych metodą Vojty. Wnioski. Dzieci z zespołem Downa systematycznie rehabilitowane metodą Vojty osiągają znacząco lepszy rozwój psychomotoryczny. Słowa kluczowe: metoda Vojty, dzieci, zespół Downa ABSTRACT Aim of study. The aim of this study was to analyse the psychomotor development of children with Down syndrome systematically stimulated by the Vojta method both at home and at the Outpatient Rehabiltation Clinic of the Białystok University Children's Hospital, as well as to compare these results with a group of children with Down Syndrome only sporadically stimulated using the Vojta method. Material and methods. The research was conducted on a group of 45 children with Down syndrome, aged from 18 to 24 months. Their psychomotor development was evaluated using the Psychoeducational Profile -Revised which provides information on the development of imitation skills, perception, gross and fine motor skills, visual-motor coordination, cognitive function, communication, and behavior. This paper offers a new approach to learning discrete models for human-robot interaction (HRI) from small data. In the motivating application, HRI is an integral part of a pediatric rehabilitation paradigm that involves a play-based, social environment aiming at improving mobility for infants with mobility impairments. Designing interfaces in this setting is challenging, because in order to harness, and eventually automate, the social interaction between children and robots, a behavioral model capturing the causality between robot actions and child reactions is needed. The paper adopts a Markov decision process (MDP) as such a model, and selects the transition probabilities through an empirical approximation procedure called smoothing. Smoothing has been successfully applied in natural language processing (NLP) and identification where, similarly to the current paradigm, learning from small data sets is crucial. The goal of this paper is two-fold: (i) to describe our application of HRI, and (ii) to provide evidence that supports the application of smoothing for small data sets.
