Objective The study was conducted to examine the efficacy of a web‐based program, informed by Pender's Health Promotion Model, given to primiparous women on the growth and development of infant, infants’ health, and women's self‐efficacy level. Methods This randomized controlled study with a posttest design was conducted in three primary care clinics. The study group comprised 71 primiparous women and their infants (intervention group: N = 35; control group: N = 36). The women who are at the 33–37th gestational week in the intervention group participated in the web‐based program. They completed four education modules. Women in the control group received routine care in clinics. Data forms were completed in the first week and first, second, and third months postpartum. Breastfeeding status, weight, head circumference, development of infants and women's self‐efficacy were evaluated in the postnatal period up to 3 months. Results In the intervention group, the ratio of infants who were exclusively breastfed was higher compared to the control group. The mean scores for the LATCH instrument which measures breastfeeding status and Parental Self‐Efficacy Scale, were significantly higher in the intervention compared to the control group (p < .05). Conclusion The women who participated in the web‐based program demonstrated better self‐efficacy and their infants demonstrated better scores on measures of growth, development, and health than those in the control group.

The objective of the study was to characterize how infantile colic is perceived and managed by German and Polish pediatricians. Data in both countries were collected by using a paper questionnaire with seven questions and predefined and free text fields for the answers. Answers from 160 German and 133 Polish pediatricians were collected. The average of the occurrence rates estimated by both responder groups were at the higher end of published rates. The majority of pediatricians from both countries rated the parental burden caused by infantile colic to be high or very high. Pediatricians’ awareness about the association between infantile colic and maternal depression and premature termination of breastfeeding is relatively well established in both countries. While more than 90% of German pediatricians stated knowledge of infantile colic being a major risk factor for shaken baby syndrome, this knowledge was only declared by half of the Polish responders. Pharmacological interventions, pro-/synbiotics or simethicone, are part of the treatment repertoire of nearly all responding pediatricians. In addition, non-pharmacological interventions (e.g., change of feeding, change of parental behavior) are also among the employed interventions. Results of this study will allow to better design and prioritize communication about infantile colic directed at pediatricians.

В качестве пробного шага возможно экспериментальное исключение молочных продуктов на срок около 2 нед., и в случае, если выраженность плача уменьшается, а при повторном введении молочных продуктов в рацион кормящей женщины вновь отмечается усиление болевой реакции, можно предположить аллергическую природу младенческой колики и исключить молочные продукты на более длительный срок.…”

Infant colic is a common cause of parental anxiety and, as a result, help-seeking behaviour. However, the relationship between breastfeeding and colic is currently not fully understood. The article presents data from various studies of the relationship between breastfeeding and colic. On the one hand, the severity of infant colic may lead to the early cessation of exclusive breastfeeding due to the mother’s fear that the baby’s crying is the result of the ineffectiveness of breastfeeding and the unreasonable transition to supplemental feeding. On the other hand, many authors have identified the protective effect of breastfeeding in relation to infant colic a less pronounced degree of infant colic is reported in the group of children, who are breastfed as compared to the children, who are formula-fed. Therefore, the task of the paediatrician is to provide competent counselling for the anxious parents of an infant with colic using evidence-based medicine (EBM) databases, which will help preserve the mother’s breastfeeding. In most cases, due to competent counselling of the parents, the severity of infant colic may be reduced by improving the quality of breastfeeding (ensuring proper breast grabbing to reduce aerophagy, increasing the proportion of consumption of the so-called «back» milk), reducing anxiety of the parents and increasing the perception of breastfeeding self-efficacy levels by mothers. This may increase the duration of breastfeeding of the infants with infant colic.
