Infant Mortality and Life Expectancy: The Inequitable Loss of Potential Life

Abstract

ISSUE BRIEFDifferences in life expectancy between racial and other subgroups of the population indicate inequities in the community. There are both societal and physical factors-including racism, poverty, and access to care-that must be resolved to increase and equalize life expectancy and decrease the infant mortality rate.
