Inelastic neutron scattering studies of Se76

Abstract: The low-lying, low-spin levels of 76 Se were studied with the (n,n ′ γ) reaction. Gamma-ray excitation function measurements were performed at incident neutron energies from 2.0 to 3.5 MeV, and γ-ray angular distributions were measured at neutron energies of 2.4, 3.0, and 3.7 MeV. From these measurements, level spins, level lifetimes, branching ratios, and multipole mixing ratios were determined. We established the 0 + 2 band, which supports the shape co-existence in 76 Se predicted by the large-scale shell mo… Show more

“…These studies have provided critical information for comparison with theory, especially on contributions to the wavefunctions from competing single-particle orbitals. In much the same way, recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements have provided spectroscopic information on the structure of low-lying states [6,7], with implications on the kinematic phase space available for the 0νββ process. However, all these studies lack the required level of sensitivity to collective degrees of freedom which have been shown to significantly impact the calculated NMEs.…”

“…The methods used in our (n , n γ) studies of 74 Ge are similar to those described in detail in our studies of 76 Ge [3] and 76 Se [6]; however, some comments are in order about the inelastic neutron scattering reaction as employed in our laboratory. As neutrons do not experience a Coulomb barrier, by varying the incident neutron energy the nucleus can be selectively excited to any energy.…”

“…At UKAL, we have performed γ-ray spectroscopic studies following inelastic neutron scattering from 76 Ge [3], which is widely regarded as one of the best candidates for the observation of 0νββ and is the focus of two large-scale searches [4,5], and 76 Se, its double-beta decay daughter [6]. Configuration interaction shell-model calculations in the j j44 model space (see the Appendix of Ref.…”

“…It is relevant to note that the shell-model calculations give a reasonable description of the E2 transition strengths in 76 Ge and 76 Se [50,51] using standard effective charges for the region [10]. A firm statement on whether or not there is additional collectivity in the 2 + 1 states of these nuclei not captured by the shell-model calculations, as suggested by Gürdal et al [7], requires that the absolute values of the g factors be measured accurately and with some precision.…”

“…This estimate can be made despite uncertainties in the absolute magnitude of the g factors. Neutron scattering studies of 76 Ge [50] and 76 Se [51] have allowed the band structures of these isobars to be observed, and low-energy shape coexistence to be identified in 76 Se. Overall, a good description of the low-lying level structures was obtained by the same shell-model calculations as discussed here.…”
