Inelastic collisions of positrons with lithium and sodium atoms

Abstract: Detailed investigations of the inelastic scattering of positrons by lithium and sodium atoms are presented. The targets are described using the Clementi-Roetti wavefunctions within the framework of the one-valence-electron model. The partial cross sections for eight values of the total angular momentum I, (corresponding to 0 s / S 7) are calculated at 25 values of the incident energy k: (0.1 s k : S 1000 eV) using the coupled-static approximation. The resulting total elastic and positronium formation cross sec… Show more

“…In Fig. 1 we show the present TCS results together with the distorted wave results of Guha and Mandal (1980) and the coupled static results of Abdel-Raouf (1988) which exhibit a sudden increase at Ei = 5 eV. Our results, however, show a smooth decrease with increasing E i • The present TCS is larger than that of Guha and Mandal (1980) and Abdel-Raouf (1988) for Ei < 20 eV, but above 20 eV the present distorted wave results fall below the results of Abdel-Raouf (1988).…”

“…Moreover, they used a Is type wavefunction for the valence electron which is actually a 3s electron. Abdel-Raouf (1988) used the coupled static and frozen core approximation in the incident positron energy range 0 ·1-1000 e V in order to study the process. In the present paper we compute the TCS for Ps formation in the ground state in e+ -Na scattering over the energy range 1-50 eV by using a distorted wave approximation, which unlike the distorted wave formalism of Guha and Mandal (1980), incorporates the effect of polarisation.…”

“…Theoretical investigation on electron-, positron-, and proton-atom scattering has been carried out by many authors. Abdel-Raouf [1] applied the coupledstatic and frozen core approximations to positron-lithium and positron-sodium scattering as a two-channel problem. Elkilany and Abdel-Raouf [2] investigated the effect of polarization potentials on antiprotons scattered by positronium using the coupled static model.…”
