Indwelling silicone femoral catheters: experience of three haemodialysis centres

Abstract: The aim of this study is to describe the experience of three haemodialysis centres using indwelling femoral silicone catheter (model SSL 1220M, Medcomp, USA) in 55 patients, three with acute renal failure, one requiring plasmapheresis, and 51 with chronic renal failure but no other available vascular access. Sixty-four catheters were in place for a mean duration of 41.5 +/- 30 days. The rate of catheter-related complications, including mechanical problems, thromboses, and infections was low and they were never… Show more

“…Our experience using tunneled femoral vein catheters for hemodialysis vascular access has been one of low complication rates and has served as a successful bridge for patients to receive more appropriate access. To our knowledge, only one prior study has discussed patient experience with a femoral vein catheter in place, but limited their discussion to only mobility (39). Our study provided a more robust patient perspective of their experience living with a femoral vein catheter and its impact on their daily living.…”

“…The Ash‐Split catheter (Medcomp) (8) has further simplified the insertion of two catheters actually being inserted as one. Silastic tunneled femoral catheters have also been used, but to a much smaller extent than atrial ones (9). Insertion as well as removal of the tunneled silastic catheter is more complicated than of the non‐tunneled catheter, and requires special operator skills.…”

“…Enfin, 100 % des patients de notre cohorte é taient dialysé s sur cathé ter, dont 20 % sur cathé ter fé moral, particuliè rement pourvoyeur de complications infectieuses ou thrombotiques [8].
