Industry 4.0 and intelligent predictive maintenance: a survey about the advantages and constraints in the Italian context

Abstract: PurposeIn the context of the Industry 4.0, this paper aims to investigate the state of the art of Italian manufacturing, focusing the attention on the implementation of intelligent predictive maintenance (IPdM) and 4.0 key enabling technologies (KETs), analyzing advantages and limitations encountered by companies.Design/methodology/approachA survey has been developed by the University of Parma in cooperation with the Italian Workers' Compensation Authority (INAIL) and was submitted to a sample of Italian compa… Show more

“…Deployment of these technologies is being adopted by several industrial sectors, which are changing their mindset (Kulshrestha et al, 2024) Industrialization is towards a wholly interconnected and automated production, featuring several innovative technologies promoting interaction between the human being, the physical and the internet. According to the literature, Industry 4.0 has the potential to increase industrial sustainability, where through the development of "smart sensors" constant man-machine connectivity is realized anywhere through continuous monitoring of the process characteristics, which are related to the product, process and machines through an online platform (Stefanini et al, 2022). Kumar et al (2020) mention that Industry 4.0 comprise different innovating technologies and holds enhanced skills to improve the sustainability of manufacturing operations, the operational reliability of equipment, and the utilization of human resources.…”

“…The control cabinet was only used for one specific process, and it was not easy to modify it according to the needs of the new system. According to what has been exposed so far, relay logic control has proven very inefficient [18]. These shortcomings were largely eliminated by the introduction of programmable logic controllers or PLCs in the control systems, which also contributed to improving quality, increased productivity and flexibility.…”
