Clustering has primarily been used as an analytical technique to group unlabeled data for extracting meaningful information. The fact that no clustering algorithm can solve all clustering problems has resulted in the development of several clustering algorithms with diverse applications. We review data clustering, intending to underscore recent applications in selected industrial sectors and other notable concepts. In this paper, we begin by highlighting clustering components and discussing classification terminologies. Furthermore, specific, and general applications of clustering are discussed. Notable concepts on clustering algorithms, emerging variants, measures of similarities/dissimilarities, issues surrounding clustering optimization, validation and data types are outlined. Suggestions are made to emphasize the continued interest in clustering techniques both by scholars and Industry practitioners. Key findings in this review show the size of data as a classification criterion and as data sizes for clustering become larger and varied, the determination of the optimal number of clusters will require new feature extracting methods, validation indices and clustering techniques. In addition, clustering techniques have found growing use in key industry sectors linked to the sustainable development goals such as manufacturing, transportation and logistics, energy, and healthcare, where the use of clustering is more integrated with other analytical techniques than a stand-alone clustering technique.

This study presents the developing process of the Śmiłowo Eco-Park, located in the Noteć valley region (Poland), is a part of the biggest Polish agri-food consortium, from its initial small waste management company to its final structure as an eco-industrial park using industrial symbiosis methods. The industrial symbiosis applied in the Eco-park promotes a business model which covers the whole life cycle of the products starting from the plant growing by animal feed preparation, livestock breeding, meat preparations, meat-bone meal production from animal waste, and the use of pig slurry as a fertilizer. The Eco-park model is presented in the form of a system of connected stream flows of materials and energy covering the full lifecycle of products, from cereal cultivation, through the production of industrial feed, and poultry and pig breeding for the production of meat products. The solutions used include the prevention of environmental pollution through the modernization of existing processes, implementation of new technologies, reduction of waste and its reuse, recycling, and recovery of materials and energy, the substitution of raw materials with waste, and thermal treatment of waste and its use as biofuel. This case study allows for analyses of the organizational and technical key strategic activities which enable waste, including hazardous waste, to be transformed into valuable materials and energy. These activities have modified the system of material and energy flows through the value chain to realize the goal of allowing profitable management of waste according to circular economy methods and also indicates methods of supporting modifications of supply chains in terms of implementation of the industrial symbiosis business model according to its relationship with sustainable development, cleaner production, and circular economy models. EIP Śmiłowo annually utilizes 300,000 t meat waste, produces 110,000 t meat bone meal biofuel, uses 120,000 t of pig manure as fertilizers, produces 460,000 GJ bioenergy, eliminates 92,000 t CO2 emissions.

Influence of Circular Economy Adoption in European Sme S Performance

This study provides an examination of the relationship between circular economy (CE) practices and firm performance in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe, following a multi-level approach. The research project outlines the stages involved to reach this goal. The first stage (paper 1) examines the trends in the existing research. We verified the variables used, the type of data, the method of analysis, the type of industry, the size of the company, the size of the sample and the topic to which the article belongs. The results indicate that there is no clear consensus on the best way to measure and operationalize CE practices and firm performance, however the variables identified can be used as a guide for future research on CE and firm performance. The second stage (paper 2) we investigate how the economic, social, and environmental performance indicators of the SME country moderates the relationship between CE practices and firm performance. In summary, the results support that the financial impact of adopting CE is positive, and it is affected by the level of national economic and environmental performance. The third stage (paper 3) the aim is develop and test empirical model include moderation by meso-level. We examined the function of intermediaries in involving SMEs in CE activities, and how the presence of Industrial Symbiosis Networks (ISN) affects SMEs' performance. The findings affirm that ISNs can boost CE adoption and intermediaries can assist SMEs in surmounting CE obstacles.
