Solar desalination is a sustainable approach to producing fresh water from saline water. Researchers have tried modifications to solar desalination systems to enhance the distillate output. This survey aims to recognize the characteristics of research work for investigating solar desalination systems. The essential terms to be focused on are computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and solar radiation consideration for the investigation. The data for this bibliometric study was taken from Scopus, with 1932 publications. The characteristics of the research work were analyzed by identifying the research publications, research subject areas, journals, most contributed countries, and data from the authors. The research trend was investigated utilizing yearly research growth, geographical contributions, source quality of publications, and participation of various institutions. VOSviewer software was used for network analysis of essential keywords used in relevant research works and to understand collaborations between the authors and co-authors. About 76% of the total publications belong to the document type articles. It illuminates research tendencies related to the topic under consideration. Results show that desalination research work concerned with CFD or solar radiation was mainly investigated in Engineering and Environmental Science, with their share of more than 50% of the total publications. Further study of relevant research works was assessed using network analysis that helped to link different keywords and authors’ collaborations. This survey helps to spot the increasing research trends and the necessity of further research.

This research problem reveals the experimental investigation at a pressure of 1.5 bar and temperature of 120°C for the medium thermal applications utilizing the four Scheffler reflectors with 16 m 2 surface area each. The Scheffler collector associated with absorber plate of mild steel of size, 0.45 m diameter, and 0.025 m thick was assessed in June 2018. The variation in solar beam radiation over the entire day was observed from 840 W/m 2 to 1278 W/m 2 , while, the absorber plate temperature was recorded within the extent of 116-195°C, however, the maximum heating temperature was measured 129°C at the end-use. The Scheffler collectors performed appropriately in the morning and evening time with substantial heat loss factor and lower optical efficiency factor. The energy efficiency of 59.28% has been achieved which is higher as compared to the parabolic solar concentrator. The higher concentration ratio of the Scheffler collector indicates it as an efficient substitute to replace fossil fuels. The system is viable for more than 1600 kWh/m 2 yearly solar potential while the cost of heating is greater than 0.05 $/kWh for them. This paper concludes that the Scheffler reflector is the most promising solar technology for the medium-temperature applications.Cite this article as: Kumar A. In this experimental research, the recovery of exergy from a Scheffler collector is assessed where a receiver cum spiral absorber tube of mild steel of size, 0.025 m diameter and 10 m length was tested at various Direct Beam Radiations (DNI) (500, 600, 700, 800, and 900 W/m2) and mass flow rates of water (400, 600, 800, 1,000 and 1,200 kg/hr). For this aim, the heating of the flowing water is performed through the receiver, installed at the fixed focus of the collector. As a significant consequence, by rising the DNI and mass flow rate, the recovered exergy enhanced. Further, the increment of the exergy factor because of the utilization of the recovered exergy from the Scheffler collector has also been investigated in this paper. The results demonstrate that by utilizing the recovered exergy, the exergy factor increased approximately 36.18%. The outcomes of this research article are also validated with the “solar parabolic dish concentrator” to set the novelty of the work.
