Industrial evaluation of FBS Linkage – a method to support engineering change management

Abstract: Engineering changes (ECs) are raised throughout the product life cycle and their management can determine the commercial success of products. A well-established method to support engineering change management (ECM) is the change prediction method (CPM). The function-behaviour-structure (FBS) linkage method enhances CPM with an FBS scheme and allows more detailed modelling and analysis of ECs. The goal of this paper is to provide an industrial evaluation of the FBS Linkage method. For that purpose, we provide f… Show more

“…In reactive decisionmaking, the change impact is assessed to compare different change options (Koh et al, 2012;Ullah et al, 2017) and to implement changes more effectively and efficiently (Pasqual and De Weck, 2012;Kocar and Akgunduz, 2010;Ou-Yang and Cheng, 2003). Some assessment methods address both proactive and reactive decisionmaking (Clarkson et al, 2004;Hamraz and Clarkson, 2015;Brooks and Mocko, 2011;Morkos and Summers, 2010).…”

“…One noteworthy approach is presented in Hamraz and Clarkson (2015), where it was preferred to conduct structured interviews for the qualitative assessment of their solution and to underline potential benefits as perceived by the end-users.…”

“…Several developments have been presented to the basic CPM (Hamraz et al, 2012;Hamraz et al, 2013b;Ahmad et al, 2013) to enrich the method with a better prediction and change propagation measurements. The most recent extension links the CPM with a function-behavior-structure (FBS) linkage method (Hamraz and Clarkson, 2015). The method provides details in modeling and analysis of engineering changes.…”
