The general features of zeolites that led to their widespread use in oil refining and petrochemistry are highlighted as well as the details of their impact on selected processes. The analysis of the catalyst market and the position of zeolites therein is a good indication of their strategic importance. Zeolites have brought many disruptive changes to these fields (e.g. FCC). They impacted also these industries in an equally important way, although more subtle, by incremental improvement of processes. The new and vast challenges facing oil refining and petrochemistry as well as the managed transition to sustainable environmental benign transport fuel industries and chemical industries will require creative science and technologies. Zeolites offer the basis of many of these technological solutions provided efficient and balanced cooperations between industry and academia are further developed.

SAPO-11 samples were synthesized with i-Pr2NH as a novel template, and applied in catalytic skeletal isomerization of linear butenes. More linear butenes were converted with increasing Si content in SAPO-11 samples, while the iso-butene selectivity was proportional to the Si content only in the lower reaction temperature region. The maximum yield of iso-butene was achieved around 763 K. The acidic properties of SAPO-11 samples were studied by NH3-TPD and IR spectroscopy. The strong acidity was due to the formation of Si domains in the framework lattice.

Remarkable enhancement in the catalytic activity and selectivity for the formation of 4-isobutylcumene (4-IBC) was observed in the isopropylation of isobutylbenzene (IBB) over highly dealuminated H-mordenite in supercritical CO 2 (sc-CO 2 ) medium. Thermogravimetric analyses confirm that reduced coking of the catalysts in sc-CO 2 medium and stronger acid sites in dealuminated H-mordenite (MOR) are the key factors for superior activity and selectivity for 4-IBC.
