A new inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrom etry (ICP-OE S) procedure has been developed for the simultaneous determination of major and minor elements in ferromanganese and ferromanganese slag as well as feed materials (ne ferro manganese and ferrom anganese dust) for a ferromanganese smelter. The samples are dissolved by fusion with a mixture of sodium peroxide and sodium carbonate, followed by leaching of the melt with hydrochloric acid. In this way all elem ents are brought quantitatively into solution. The calibration solutions were prepared sim ilarly from appropriate certi ed refere nce m aterials, and the calibration graphs were veri ed by means of ferromanganese and m anganese ore certi ed referen ce materials.

Microwave sample preparation methods have come a long way since the earliest experiments with domestic microwave ovens. This study concerned the decomposition of ferrochromium samples containing a high proportion of insoluble carbides by means of a focused microwave digestion system. The experimental results showed that samples were completely decomposed in HNO 3 -HF mixed acids. Optimization of the microwave dissolution programmes involved the study of acid mixture volume, the control of pressure and temperature inside a reference vessel, power control and the influence of magnetic stirring during the dissolution processes. Chromium was determined potentiometrically in each of the intermediate digests obtained during optimization of the procedure, for demonstration of the successive recoveries of this element. The selected dissolution procedure provided a recovery of 99-100% Cr under the following conditions: 5 min at 250 W/30 min at 400 W/15 min at 500 W (without stirring) and 5 min at 250 W/15 min at 400 W/5 min at 500 W (with stirring) and showed excellent reproducibility with a slightly improved RSD when magnetic stirring was used. The accuracy was determined using three high-carbon ferrochromium reference materials: ECRM 585-1 from the Bureau of Analysed Samples, BAM 530-1 from the Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung and BCS 204-4 from British Chemical Standards. The results were compared with those obtained using a classical dissolution procedure. The microwave solutions could also be used for the simultaneous determination of major and minor elements in FeCr samples by spectroscopic techniques.

This paper describes the x‐ray fluorescence determination of major and minor elements in ferrotitanium, ferroniobium and ferrovanadium. Samples preparation was accomplished using two different procedures: compressed pellets and fusion beads. Calibration graphs were prepared by mixing two ferroalloys of each of the considered types in different proportions. These ferroalloys were selected from industrial batches, providing the most varied composition available in order to cover as completely as possible the ranges of composition listed in ISO specifications. Total reproducibility tests, incorporating sample preparation and measurement, were performed using six samples prepared with the ferroalloys having the highest alloying grade. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values referred to the major element in Fe–Ti, Fe–Nb and Fe–V were 0.20, 0.17 and 0.21%, respectively, when using compressed pellets, and 0.16, 0.14 and 0.13% when using fusion beads. As regards the minor elements, the RSD values were in all cases below 5% for compressed pellets and below 3% for fused beads. The criterion applied to test the agreement of the two methods showed that the difference between the results provided by both samples preparation systems may be explained in terms of random errors. Accuracy was checked by analysing Certified Reference Materials of each of the types of ferroalloys studied. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
