Inductive teaching method–an alternate method for small group learning

Abstract: Background: Different forms of small group interactive teaching have found an increasing role in medical education in the recent past. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of topic-based small group tutorials and compare between two such tutorials, the directed tutorial where the tutor takes the initiative and the inductive tutorial which places the initiative on the student. Methods: Final-year medical students were exposed to alternate sessions of directed and inductive teaching during their… Show more

“…Knowledge transfer to new settings or problems, different from the original learning context, requires variability in practicing authentic problems in a real or simulated environment to increase the number and complexity of schemata in long-term memory (Gentile 2000;Van Merrienboer and Sweller 2010). Jones et al (2008) evaluated students' perception toward both deductive and inductive learning approaches. They stated that the inductive approach is better than the deductive approach for generating students' interest, remembering facts, and comprehension, while the deductive approach enabled a greater content coverage in a given time.…”

“…39 Inductive teaching in STQD could be characterized as a constructivist method, that students constructed their own knowledge rather than had it imparted by the teacher. 40,41 In class, the discussion provided opportunities for knowledge elaboration. 42 When students were able to answer other student's questions encountered during self-study, they gained a higher sense of achievement and increased the motivation to learn.…”

“…Photographs, diagnostic imaging investigations and diagrams were used in conjunction with free‐hand drawings on projected overhead transparencies to highlight the process of change in foetal development over time. An inductive teaching approach was used, with much of the lecture content elicited through student questioning.…”
