Induction Spot Welding of Metal/CFRPC Hybrid Joints

Abstract: Today's areas of application for lightweight materials range from consumer goods and sports to high technology applications in transportation like aerospace or automotive. Thermoplastic composites manufactured by compression molding, thermoforming, tape laying, or injection molding will play a major role due to their weldability, their suitability for automated production (robot), and their recyclability. To reach a further step of weight reduction, the use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRPC)… Show more

“…Single-lap joints presented a characterization of the bonding mechanisms and the influence of the surface treatments. The previous described test series showed that the pre-treatment of the metallic joining partner by corundum blasting and the application of additional polymer in the joining zone have positive influence on the shear tensile strength [24]. A join of metal (steel DC01 and aluminium AlMg3) and CFRPC (organic sheets CF-PA66 and CF-PEEK) is developed by means of induction heating.…”

“…Analogamente à tecnologia weld-bonding, Mitschang et al [13] investigaram a adição de filmes intermediários poliméricos a juntas híbridas metal-compósito unidas por indução. Durante o processo de união o filme termoplástico é amolecido e reconsolidado, fornecendo forças adesivas à junta.…”

“…Consequently, direct PEEK-metal bonding is necessary. Welding has been proposed for direct polymer-metal bonding [11]. However, the process temperature is higher than the melting temperature of PEEK, which may damage MEMS devices and cause severe problems via differential thermal expansion.…”
