Induction of the Bacillus subtilis SOS-like response by Escherichia coli RecA protein.

Abstract: A plasmid that expresses the Escherichia coli RecA protein partially restored DNA repair and recombination capability and induction of the SOS-like (SOB) response in a recE4 mutant of Bacillus subtilis. In the presence of DNAdamaging agents, the E. coli RecA protein induced din operon expression, Weigle-reactivation activity, and synthesis of a B.subtilis recombination protein (Recbs) analogous to RecA but was unable to stimulate prophage induction. In addition, the RecA protein was capable of inducing the SOB… Show more

“…Overexpression of E. coli RecA protein can complement the deficiency in din gene induction in strains of B. subtilis carrying the recA4 mutation (5,22). In addition, RecA of B. subtilis can facilitate the inactivation of LexA repressor in vitro (25).…”

“…An open reading frame (ORF) whose translation had homology to E. coli RecA and which spanned the Sstl site thought to be internal to the gene by DNA (2) and the posttranslational conversion of UmuD to UmuD' (8,44,53). A further role of RecA protein in UV-induced mutagenesis has also been identified (44) (35), whereas the reverse is true of E. coli RecA, which does not stimulate the induction of bacillus prophages (34).…”

“…Competent bacteria exhibit new properties with regard to surface antigens (Nava et al, 1963), membrane nuclease activity (Lacks & Greenberg, 1973;Lacks & Neuberger, 1975), DNA transport (Lerman 8z Tolmach, 1957), recombination and repair (Love & Yasbin, 1986), expression of a set of specific proteins (Morrison & Baker, 1979;Raina & Ravin, 1980) and synthesis of the lipid polymer poly(P-hydroxybutyrate) (Reusch & Sadoff, 1983 ; ClavC et al, 1989). Membrane hyperpolarization (Trombe, 1983), as well as a stimulation of glycolysis associated with an increased ATP pool and a cytoplasmic alkalinization (Lopez et al, 1989), are observed in competent S .…”
