Induction of streptomycin resistance in the wild tomato Lycopersicon peruvianum

Abstract: A protoplast mutagenesis and cell selection system was used for the isolation of streptomycin resistant Lyeopersieon peruvianum colonies. Protoplasts were treated with the mutagen N-nitroso-methylurea and could be regenerated into fertile plants, carrying the streptomycin resistant character. Several classes of streptomycin resistance could be distinguished. Reciprocal crosses between streptomycin resistant and sensitive plants showed a non-Mendelian transmission of the resistance trait. Streptomycin resistanc… Show more

“…Chloroplast-encoded resistance to streptomycin has been induced by chemical mutagenesis in L . peruvianum (Jansen et al ., 1990) and in L. esculentum, L. pennellii and S. lycopersicoides (Jansen, 1993) . In the same way lincomycin-resistant genotypes have been obtained from L. peruvianum (Glas et al ., 1990), L .…”

“…Induction of streptomycin-resistant plantlets showing chloroplast encoded mutants have, to date, been obtained mostly in Solanaceous species including eggplant, red pepper, tomato and tobacco through mutagenesis using alkylating agents such as NMU (N-nitroso-N-methyl urea), NEU (nitroso ethyl urea) and EMS (ethyl methane sulphonate) (Fluhr et al, 1985;Mc Cabe et al, 1989;Jansen et al, 1990;Svab et al, 1990;To et al, 1992;Chen et al, 1993;Rao et al, 1993Rao et al, , 1997Subhash et al, 1996, Farooqui et al, 1997.…”

“…Mutants conferring resistance to streptomycin have now been isolated, using in vitro culture methods, in several higher plant species mostly in the Solanaceae (McCabe et al 1989;Jansen et al 1990). The most extensively characterised of these are of Nicotiana tabacum L. Resistance is maternally inherited (Maliga et al 1973(Maliga et al , 1975 and localised to the 16S rRNA (Etzold et al 1987;Fromm et al 1989) or the S12 ribosomal protein gene (Galili et al 1989) of the plastid DNA.…”
