“…The present experiments confirm the previous results (Burdick et al, 1943;Saunders, 1947) even though the animals were chosen without regard to the cycle. We have also shown that mating is not a consequence of the pmsginduced ovulation.…”

“…Either they are both ovulated at one time or more than one ovulation occurs in response to the gonadotrophin treatment. Previous investigations (Burdick, Watson, Ciampa & Ciampa, 1943;Saunders, 1947) have demonstrated that, following a single injection of gonadotrophic hormone, ovulation can be induced in the postpuberal di-oestrous animals. In view of these facts, the effect of the pmsg on ovulation and mating in the post-puberal mouse during the immediate post-PMSG-injection period has been investigated.…”

“…The high incidence of abnormal oocytes ovulated after exogenous ovarian stimulation found in this and other studies (reviewed by McKiernan and Bavister, 1998) may be due to: (1) the production of aged or``overripened'' oocytes induced by premature ovulation of differentiated antral follicles sensitive to the LH-like activity of PMSG and later retention in the oviducts bỳ`t ube-locking'' (Edwards and Gates, 1959;Edwards and Fowler, 1960). We should note that female mice ovulate within 24 hr of a single injection of PMSG, hCG, LH, or FSH (Burdick et al, 1943;Saunders, 1947;Edwards and Fowler, 1960;Stern and Schuetz, 1970;Kaufman and Whittingham, 1972). (2) hCG-induced ovulation of degenerated oocytes that had matured when exposed to the exogenous PMSG (Edwards and Gates, 1959).…”

“…Sexually mature female mice will ovulate within 24 hr of an injection of pmsg, hcg, lh or fsh (Burdick & Whitney, 1941;Burdick, Watson, Ciampa & Ciampa, 1943;Saunders, 1947;Edwards & Fowler, 1960;Stern & Schuetz, 1970). The number of oocytes ovulated are similar to the number released at normal oestrus (Edwards & Fowler, 1960; Kaufman, unpublished data) but unless the mice are injected immediately before oestrus, they do not mate (Stern & Schuetz, 1970).…”
