“…Here we show that exposing fish oocytes to DES at a dose within a range similar to that used in experimental exposure to 17,20␤-DHP induces oocyte maturation. Estradiol-17␤ has been reported to be ineffective in inducing fish oocyte maturation (11,12) and even inhibitory in several teleost species (13)(14)(15). Thus, the stimulatory effect of DES to induce fish oocyte maturation observed in this study has not been published previously.…”

“…In goldfish with mature ovaries, ovulation is induced within one or two days of a temperature increase from cold (approximately 12" C) to warm (approximately 20°C) water (Yamamoto et al, 1966); this technique has been used in several studies of ovulation in this species (Yamazaki, 1965;Yamamoto and Yamazaki, 1967;Stacey et al, 1979). The stated or implicit assumption in these and related investigations (Pandey & Hoar, 1972;Pandey et al, 1973Pandey et al, , 1977Stacey & Pandey, 1975;Lam et al, 1975Lam et al, , 1976Peter et al, 1978) is that temperature is the major factor regulating the occurrence of spontaneous ovulation in goldfish; thus, whereas, ovaries of fish kept in cold water will develop to a preovulatory condition (tertiary yolk stage, Yamazaki, 1965), ovulation will not occur until water temperature reaches some critical level. However, there is a suggestion that factors other than temperature play a role in ovulation; Yamazaki (1965) states that the presence of sexually active male goldfish, or aquatic vegetation stimulates ovulation in the goldfish, and it has been assumed that standing water is a necessary stimulus for ovulation .…”

“…Our justification for omitting the IP saline control i s that there is ample evidence from previous studies (Lam ei al. 1975; experiment 1 of this paper; Pandey and Hoar 1972;Pandey ef al. 1973;Stacey and Pandey 1975) that gravid goldfish injected intraperitoneally with saline will not ovulate at 12 f 1 "C.…”

“…The source and the details of maintenance of the fish (goldfish Carassius auratus, of the comet variety) were described previously (Pandey and Hoar 1972). Goldfish kept at a temperature of 12 f 1 "C under a long photoperiod (16 h light alternating with 8 h darkness) and fed with brine shrimps twice a day attain sexual maturity but do not ovulate (references cited in Introduction).…”
