Induction of IL-8 production in human alveolar macrophages and human bronchial epithelial cells in vitro by swine dust

Abstract: Background-Exposure to swine dust causes an intense airway inflammation with increased levels of interleukin 8 (IL-8) and predominantly neutrophils in the nasal and bronchoalveolar lavage fluids of healthy human subjects. It is not clear which components in the swine house environment are responsible for the airway reaction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the eVect in vitro of swine dust components on human alveolar macrophages and bronchial epithelial cells. Methods-Normal human bron… Show more

“…Acute and chronic exposures of experimental animals to animal facility dust are associated with recruitment of neutrophils and macrophages into the lung and lung pathology similar to that in humans exposed to animal facility dust (9,16,43). In vitro exposure of macrophages and lung epithelial cells to animal facility and agricultural dust extracts increases production of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-8 (40,46,61).…”

“…Increased concentrations of TNF-a, IL -1, IL-6 and IL-8 were also found in BAL fluid following exposure to swine dust in vivo [3,4] and in supernatant of epithelial cells and alveolar macrophages following exposure to dust in vitro [9,10]. Granulocytes have also been shown to release many of these cytokines, i.e.…”
