Induction of CYP1A2 by heavy coffee consumption in Serbs and Swedes

Abstract: Habitual heavy coffee consumption increases CYP1A2 activity. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons formed during roasting of coffee beans might partly be responsible for this effect. The reason for the observed lower CYP1A2 activity in Serbs as compared to Swedes remains to be investigated.

“…In the Swedish subjects the mean age was 29 ± SD 8.3 years (range 18-60) with the mean weight 69 ± SD 12 kg (range 47-109) (no data on weight in two subjects). The Swedish subjects consisted of 112 women and 73 men and 39 (11 men and 28 women) were classified as smokers (definition of smokers > 2 cigarettes/ day) as described previously [19,20]. There were 44 women using OC.…”

“…CYP2A6 is responsible for the hydroxylation of certain aromatic compounds such as coumarin and nicotine. 56 Two novel phosphorylation sites were located in the tryptic peptides RFpSIATLR (Ser-131) and NYpTM(Ox)SFLPR (Thr-488) ( Table 5). It has to be mentioned that RFpSIATLR is homologue in CYP2A13 and NYpTM(Ox)SFLPR is homologue in CYP2A13 and CYP2A7, although both isoforms were not unambiguously identified in any donor sample.…”

“…Ethnicity is an important demographic variable affecting interindividual variability in drug metabolism and response, and a number of differences among populations have already been reported [14,24,25]. CYP2A6 exhibits marked interethnic differences [26], but data on its activity in Eastern European populations are scarce [11].…”
