Induction and Synchronization of Estrus

Abstract: Estrus cycle is a rhythmic change that occur in the reproductive system of females starting from one estrus phase to another. The normal duration of estrus cycle is 21 days in cow, sow, and mare, 17 days in ewe, and 20 days in doe. The species which exhibit a single estrus cycle are known as monstrous and species which come into estrus twice or more are termed polyestrous animals. Among them some species have estrus cycles in a particular season and defined as seasonal polyestrous. It includes goats, sheep, an… Show more

“…A blood‐tinted mucous discharge from the vulva of cows and heifers can be detected from 1 to 3 days after standing heat. This indicates met‐oestrous bleeding that the ovulation has occurred and may take 18 to 20 days for the subsequent oestrus (Pal & Dar, 2020). Cows show less sexual activity in the first two postpartum ovulations, so oestrus is usually detected in the second or third cycle after parturition (Britt et al., 1986) (Figure 2).…”

“…When estrous detection on the farm is good, PGF 2α treatment and AI at the observed estrus are recommended [155], while when estrous detection is poor, TAI protocols may be recommended. Recently published reviews [156][157][158][159][160][161] and meta-analyses [162][163][164] may contribute to selecting from an economic and management point of view the most suitable and most effective TAI protocol(s) for our dairy farm.…”

“…The most common and notable uses of estrogen are in birth control pills or contraceptives and in hormone replacement therapy in humans. Estrogen is also used as a tool in estrous synchronization in animals (Pal and Dar, 2020). In humans, women between the ages of 25 to 50 who are estrogen deficient are generally prescribed a high dose of estrogen.…”
