“…Interestingly, in agreement with our results, EPA and ARA were also described as potent apoptosis inducers in human monocytes 36,37) . This raises the hypothesis of a specific effect of PUFA with 20 carbons, independently of the series involved (n-6 or n-3) and supports the role of inflammatory processes since these PUFA are both involved in prostaglandin and leukotriene pathways.…”

“…Addition of lipids at clinically meaningful concentrations had no significant effect, while 1% of lipids in whole blood cultures induced a pro-inflammatory response in both term and VLBW infants. This confirms previous studies that demonstrated an immunomodulatory effect of lipids on immune cells in adults [11-13, 19, 24], which explained the immunomodulatory effect by enhanced apoptosis of monocytes [24], inhibition of chemotaxis of neutrophils and increased bacterial clearance [25]. In previous studies we noted that the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to S. epidermidis stimulation is dependent on gestational age, while counteracting anti-inflammatory cytokine production seemed individually regulated [20].…”

“…Recent studies demonstrated that PUFAs affected proliferation and survival of various cell types in vitro and in different tissue in vivo [122][123][124][125][126]. Besides death receptormediated apoptosis the mitochondrial death pathway was also implicated in the effects of PUFAs on proliferation and survival.…”
