Induced Spawning and Egg Quality Evaluation of Red Snapper, Lutjanus campechanus

Abstract: Brood red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, were captured from the wild and induced to ovulate by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection; eggs and sperm were manually stripped; and the eggs were artificially fertilized. Eggs were evaluated by the following egg quality parameters: buoyancy, fertilization, egg size, and oil globule size and number. The relationship of these egg quality parameters and brood characteristics (female size, fecundity, time of year, and response time to ovulation) to 36 h posthatch… Show more

“…The size of the oil globule (0.115 ± 0.013 mm, n = 100) was similar to that reported for other species: for L. argentimaculatus, 0.140 ± 0.005 mm (Emata et al 1994) and 0.14 ± 0.16 mm (Leu et al 2003); for L. griseus, 0.139 mm (Cabrera et al (1998); and for L. campechanus, 0.117 ± 0.015 mm (Bourque and Phelps 2007).…”

“…Maturation was detected by inserting a polyethylene tube (0.75 mm inner diameter) into the genital pore, followed by gentle aspiration of ovary tissue (oocytes). In males, a gentle massage of the abdomen followed by sperm release was sufficient indication of mature specimens (Singhagraiwan and Doi 1993, Leu et al 2003, Bourque and Phelps 2007. The fish were transported from the cages to the Marine Biology Station (around 30 min by speed boat), where a gonadal biopsy was taken and analyzed in detail.…”

“…Latency, mean egg, and oil droplet diameters, as well as incubation period and newly hatched larval size in the present study were similar to those of wild spotted rose snapper spawners from the same area (Ibarra-Castro and Duncan 2007), captive spawners of the same species in Costa Rica (Boza-Abarca et al 2008;Herrera-Ulloa et al 2010), and other snapper species (Lim et al 1985;Leu et al 2003;Bourque and Phelps 2007). The quality of the spawned eggs was usually high in the first as well as in all consecutive spawns.…”

“…Larvae are typically transferred 24 h post hatch to larval tanks where rearing density is lowered to 0.1 larva mL −1 or less. Incubation of red snapper eggs at a density of 2 eggs mL −1 or higher was shown detrimental to larval survival estimated 36 h post hatch (Bourque and Phelps, 2007), but the actual changes of water quality parameters such as levels of dissolved oxygen and un-ionized ammonia induced by elevated density were not reported in this experiment. In addition, this study did not document the kinetics of mortality during development, which prevented evaluating the viability of larvae surviving the early phases of exposures and determining the cumulative effects of prolonged exposures.…”
