Induced Resistance to Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Soybean

Abstract: Induced resistance in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, to the bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), was investigated in greenhouse experiments using the treatments of mechanical injury, a chemical inducer (Actigard™, Novartis Crop Protection Inc., Greensboro, NC) and defoliation by the bean leaf beetle and the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker). Experiments were conducted on soybean PI 227687, two soybean cultivars (Colfax and Williams 82) and a soybean germplasm line (HC95-24MB). Dua… Show more

“…Earlier studies have demonstrated that mechanical injury induces resistance to insects in soybean plants (Reynolds and Smith, 1985), but the level of induction is significantly lower than that by feeding injury Srinivas et al, 2001). Our results show that mechanical injury caused less food consumption by larvae, but had little effect on larval growth, which agrees with earlier studies.…”

“…sojae (Hartwig et al 1994). Williams 82 (Bernard and Cremeens 1988) has been demonstrated to be induced by defoliators (Srinivas and Danielson 2001, Lanka et al 2021), but susceptible to piercing-sucking species like soybean aphid, A. glycines (Hill et al 2004). Progeny 4906RR (Progeny Ag Products, Wynne, AR) is a commercial variety with known inducibility to defoliators (Dryburgh and Davis 2021).…”
