Induced Polyploidy in Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. and Amaranthus dubius Mart. ex Thell

Abstract: Induction of polyploidy by experimental methods has been proved to be a handy tool in tampering with the genotype of the organisms and in widening the amplitude of variation in the gene pool. Though various methods of induction of polyploidy have been developed, induction through the application of colchicine has been met with remarkable success especially with many herbaceous plants. As a part of the programme of induction of polyploidy in various species of Amaranthaceae two species viz. Amaranthus hypochondr… Show more

“…As Stebbins (1971) suggested, this tendency is more likely in plants with smaller chromosomes and lower chiasma frequency. In a recent study (Behera and Patnaik 1975) in the hybrid with both auto-and allo-syndeitic pairing in which case 24II are also theoretically possible. On this assumption when (p+q)24 is binomially expanded with a coefficient of bivalent realisation or p=0.75 (0.7 in case of Pal's data) and a coefficient of univalent formation or q=0.25, the observed frequencies were found to be strongly deviating from the expected frequencies of distribution (Fig.…”

“…Raw plant extracts have been used to cure a variety of diseases (Chang et al, 2020). Extracts from various plants have recently been used to supplement mainstream medicine by using nontraditional diagnostic and medicinal methods in the treatment of a variety of ailments (Behera, 1975(Behera, , 1982Adedeji and Fanimokun, 1984).…”
