Induced microseismicity and tremor signatures illuminate different slip behaviours in a natural shale fault reactivated by a fluid pressure stimulation (Mont Terri)

Abstract: Summary Fault slip induced by fluid perturbation in shale formations may only lead to as sparse seismicity. However, fault slip may strongly impact the integrity of shale formations that serve as caprocks for geological reservoirs holding buoyant fluids such as CO2, natural gas, or hydrogen. A better understanding of the fluid reactivation processes of fault and the seismic triggering process is therefore critical for reservoir monitoring and fault stability. Here we analyze the seismic response… Show more

“…The decrease in effective normal stress leads to a lower degree of interface locking on the fault and limits the magnitude of stress drops (Moreno et al, 2010). This may imply different slip behaviors on the pre-existing fault in response to fluid injection (e.g., De Barros et al, 2023).…”

“…A number of studies have pointed out that aseismic fault slip can precede seismic slip on a fault (Cappa et al, 2019;Cornet et al, 1997;De Barros et al, 2018;Guglielmi et al, 2015a). A fault with initially rate-strengthening properties (see Section 2.2.1) could change to the velocityweakening regime, capable of a seismic activation (Aretusini et al, 2021;Dal Zilio et al, 2022;De Barros et al, 2023). The observations of this process are quite novel and encourage new investigations to consider the possibility of mixed modes of friction slip in laboratory experiments and numerical model from fault failing first aseismically and then seismically.…”
