We propose an approach to induced gravity, or Sakharov's "metrical elasticity", which requires only an affine spacetime that accommodates scalar fields. The setup provides the induction of metric gravity from a pure affine action, and it is established in two possible ways: (i ) at the classical level, Einstein-Hilbert action arises with both, metric and Newton's constant, from the nonzero potential energy of the background field (ii ) at the quantum level (quantized matter), gravity scale is induced from the one-loop effective action by integrating out the scalar degrees of freedom. In the former, the cosmological constant is absorbed leading to the gravitational sector, however, the fact remains that quantum corrections induce a large cosmological constant. This new approach adds a crucial feature to induced gravity which is the fact that the metric structure is not imposed from the scratch, but it is an outcome of the primary theory.

Metric-affine gravity and inflation

We classify the metric-affine theories of gravitation, in which the metric and the connections are treated as independent variables, by use of several constraints on the connections. Assuming the Einstein-Hilbert action, we find that the equations for the distortion tensor (torsion and nonmetricity) become algebraic, which means that those variables are not dynamical. As a result, we can rewrite the basic equations in the form of Riemannian geometry. Although all classified models recover the Einstein gravity in the Palatini formalism (in which we assume there is no coupling between matter and the connections), but when matter field couples to the connections, the effective Einstein equations include an additional hyper energy-momentum tensor obtained from the distortion tensor. Assuming a simple extension of a minimally coupled scalar field in metricaffine gravity, we analyze an inflationary scenario. Even if we adopt a chaotic inflation potential, certain parameters could satisfy observational constraints. Furthermore, we find that a simple form of Galileon scalar field in metric-affine could cause G-inflation.

In the same base setup as Sakharov's induced gravity, we investigate emergence of gravity in effective quantum field theories (QFT), with particular emphasis on the gauge sector in which gauge bosons acquire anomalous masses in proportion to the ultraviolet cutoff Λ ℘ . Drawing on the fact that Λ 2 ℘ corrections explicitly break the gauge and Poincare symmetries, we find that it is possible to map Λ 2 ℘ to spacetime curvature as a covariance relation and we find also that this map erases the anomalous gauge boson masses. The resulting framework describes gravity by the general relativity (GR) and matter by the QFT itself with log Λ ℘ corrections (dimensional regularization). This QFT-GR concord predicts existence of new physics beyond the Standard Model such that the new physics can be a weakly-interacting or even a noninteracting sector comprising the dark matter, dark energy and possibly more. The concord has consequential implications for collider, astrophysical and cosmological phenomena.
