Indoor Thermal Performance of a Retrofitted Air-Conditioned Mosque: Case Study for Penang State Mosque

Abstract: In a mosque environment, occupants are temporarily in the situation of various dress and congregate activities which desire comfortable environment. Inappropriate thermal comfort condition in a mosque leads the distraction in fulfilling the religious practice and also causing emotional influence. The proper setting of thermal comfort parameters is important to provide a suitable environment for the mosque occupants. Proper investigations of thermal comfort may help to optimize the usage of the cooling systems … Show more

“…The current air conditioning systems in Malaysia face several issues that impact energy efficiency and sustainability. These issues are often exacerbated by the country's hot and humid climate and the increasing demand for cooling [15]. Meanwhile, building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) applications, which have the potential to contribute to renewable energy generation and reduce reliance on traditional power sources, also face challenges in their widespread adoption.…”

“…One of the key issues with current air conditioning systems in Malaysia is their high energy consumption. Air conditioners account for a significant portion of electricity usage in both residential and commercial buildings [15][16][17]. The high demand for cooling, coupled with inefficient cooling systems and improper maintenance, leads to excessive energy consumption, and increases the strain on the power grid.…”

“…Due to the importance and potential benefits of applying energy management system in mosques, in relation to the worshipers' convenience and contribution to the preservation of the environment, several scientific initiatives and projects have been developed to incorporate elements of environmental sustainability in the management of energy of the mosque. Hussin et al (2019) conducted research on the energy usage and optimization strategies from a few selected retrofitted air-conditioned mosques in Penang, Malaysia. In Malaysia, most of the old and traditional mosques with excellent air ventilation rarely receive energy assessments because of its low average operational energy intensity as most of the load had only consisted of lightings and small fans.…”
