Indoor navigation with use of geomagnetic anomalies

Abstract: There are many applications for indoor location determination, from personal navigation to firefighting and disaster response. GPS signals are too weak for indoor use, however, and the problem of developing a reliable indoor navigation system remains unsolved. Wi-Fi fingerprinting is a promising new technique. Animals such as sea turtles and spiny lobsters use the earth's magnetic field for navigation with a fingerprinting approach that is similar to Wi-Fi fingerprinting. In this paper, we investigate the poss… Show more

“…On a computer, a map of the court can be uploaded and the tennis ball can be moved to known locations on the court in order to calibrate the system to set the expected signal strengths at different locations. (Pritt, 2013) The accuracy of the system can be increased by the installation of more anchors across the entirety of the court. A significant issue caused by the use of Wi-Fi is the signal fluctuation that can occur along with possible interference from neighbouring devices.…”

“…Figure 17: Heat map of geomagnetic strength in a building (Pritt, 2013) At present, smartphones and tablets have both magnetic sensors and accelerometers which are able to map the magnetic fingerprint of an area. For a geomagnetic fingerprint to be successfully implemented, the two phases of training and positioning must be completed.…”
