This paper is carried out to find out the attitudinal resources used by students in Play Performance class through appraisal framework (Martin & White, 2005). It focuses on how the students negotiate attitudes to express their feelings, judgements, and appreciation of “Of Mice and Men” production process. The data for this qualitative study were collected from students’ reflections which were selected purposely from different production and artistic divisions. It analyses 109 expressions based on three domains of attitudinal resources in the appraisal theory. The most frequently used resources are affect resources that serve to express students’ positive or negative feelings. The findings show that although students experience a certain degree of insecurity [-security], they reveal positive inclination [+inclination] towards the production process. The judgement and appreciation resources are used to evaluate the behavior and learning processes. The discussion demonstrates that this systemic functional linguistic framework works as a solid basis to analyze students’ reflections. This study implies that the appraisal framework can be one of the considerations in evaluating learners’ performance.

Code-Switching in Multilingual Roving People’s Conversations

This paper aims at analyzing the types of code-switching in the conversation of multilingual roving people, who move from one country to another country. The participants of this qualitative research were five multilingual roving people. Audio recordings and interviews were used to collect the data. The results reveal that the types of code-switching employed by the multilingual roving people were intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, situational switching, and metaphorical switching. The researchers also found that the factors influencing the multilingual roving people in switching the codes included the speaker, interlocutors, changes in the situation because of the third person, and changes in the topic. The researchers concluded that the type of code-switching that appeared the most was intra-sentential switching and the most influencing factor why the participants did code-switching was the interlocutors.

The co-existence of languages in a speech community prompts language users to do code-switching in communication. They do it for certain reasons. This paper is to report language awareness among language users and the reasons why people do code-switching in their speech communities. Using an open-ended questionnaire, this research involved 50 participants. They were asked to identify the languages they had in their repertoire, the language they used when they communicate with certain people, and the reasons why they did code-switching in communication. The results showed that, first, the participants had awareness of languages in their repertoire, namely Indonesian, a local language, and English. Second, they admitted that they did code-switching in communication. Thirdly, the reasons for codeswitching were to discuss a particular topic, to signal a change of dimension, to signal group membership, and to show affective functions.
