Abstract. The development of the internet today is becoming easier to access anywhere, anytime, and by anyone. However, with the ease of internet access, it not only has a positive impact on the community, but also has many negative impacts caused by using the internet. One example is problematic internet use. Based on several studies, it was found that students are vulnerable to problematic internet use, because students access the internet at any time both for academic purposes and for entertainment purposes only. This study uses descriptive quantitative methods with the subject of 426 students in the city of Bandung. The purpose of this study is to find out how the description of problematic internet use among students in the city of Bandung. The measuring instrument used is the Indonesia Problematic Internet Use Scale (Andangsari et al., 2019). The results of this study found that the level of problematic internet use for students in the city of Bandung is at a moderate level. Keywords: College Student, Problematic Internet Use Abstrak. Perkembangan internet saat ini menjadi lebih mudah untuk diakses dimana saja, kapan saja, dan oleh siapa saja. Namun dengan semakin mudahnya akses internet ini tidak hanya memberikan dampak positif bagi masyarakat, tetapi banyak juga dampak negatif yang disebabkan dari penggunaan internet. Salah satu contohnya adalah problematic internet use. Berdasarkan beberapa penelitian ditemukan bahwa mahasiswa rentan mengalami problematic internet use, karena mahasiswa mengakses internet setiap saatnya baik untuk tujuan akademik maupun mencari hiburan semata. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif deskriptif dengan subjek 426 mahasiswa di kota Bandung. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui bagaimana gambaran dari problematic internet use pada kalangan mahasiswa di Kota Bandung. Alat ukur yang digunakan adalah Indonesia Problematic Internet Use Scale (Andangsari et al., 2019). Hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa tingkat problematic internet use pada mahasiswa di Kota Bandung berada pada tingkatan yang sedang. Kata Kunci: Mahasiswa, Problematic Internet Use

An Analysis of the Impact of Social Media Addiction on Academic Engagement of Students

The study's goal is to comprehend how internet addiction affects students' academic performance. However, very few research has been able to explain how excessive internet use causes students to lose interest in their academic work. Many studies have examined the detrimental association between addictions and academic performance. This research consists of two factors: internet addiction (emotional and cognitive preoccupation with internet and loss of control and interference with daily life) and academic engagement (enthusiasm and commitment). Through questionnaires, data was gathered from 186 students at a higher institution in Nigeria. Both correlation and regression were used to evaluate the data. The results of the investigation demonstrated that internet addiction significantly and unfavorably affects enthusiasm and commitment. It's interesting to note that internet obsession on an emotional or cognitive level was not shown to be a reliable indicator of internet addiction or loss of control.

The aim of the study is to understand the effect of Internet addiction on student’s academic engagement. There are numerous studies explaining the negative relationship between Internet addiction and academic performance still very few studies could explain how the excessive use of the internet disrupts students’ academic engagement. This study focuses on two aspects, each of academic engagement viz, dedication, and vigor and Internet addiction viz, Emotional, and cognitive preoccupation with internet and Loss of control, and interference with daily life. Data was collected from 152 students in an Institute in India through questionnaires. The data was analyzed using Correlation and regression. The analysis showed that Internet addiction has a significant, negative impact on vigor and dedication. Interestingly, it was found that Emotional and cognitive preoccupation with the internet is not a significant predictor of Internet addiction as Loss of control.
