Indolent T‐cell‐rich small B‐cell hepatic lymphoma in a Golden Retriever

Abstract: Key Clinical MessageAn 11‐year‐old female spayed Golden Retriever presented for an incidentally found liver mass. The hepatic mass and intra‐abdominal lymph nodes had a marked heterogeneous T‐cell population and far fewer numbers of small clonal B cells. This T‐cell‐rich small B‐cell lymphoma had a unique histological pattern and indolent clinical course.

“…In these cases, histopathology and immunohistochemistry remain mandatory. Additionally, PCR for Antigen Receptor Rearrangements (PARR) analysis can help in achieving the correct diagnosis and define lineage allocation ( 20 ); however it can be less sensitive and accurate than FC to predict B and T phenotype ( 10 ).…”

“…The liver may appear normal or diffusely enlarged and hyperechoic or hypoechoic though there are reports of discrete, hypoechoic masses as seen in this case. 12,13 The spleen is typically enlarged and hypoechoic with a diffuse heterogeneous texture commonly referred to as "Swiss cheese appearance." Finally, affected lymph nodes appear enlarged, rounded, and hypoechoic.…”

“…In both cases, aggregated or scattered large B cells intermixed with variable numbers of small T cells were reported histologically [ 6 , 7 ]. There is also a report of an indolent hepatic lymphoma in an 11-year-old Golden Retriever that was comprised of clonal small B cells surrounding larger numbers of small to intermediate, mixed T cells, forming atypical follicular structures [ 8 ].…”
