Individual Tree Crown Detection Using UAV Orthomosaic

Abstract: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used in forestry as they are economical and flexible. This study aims to present the advantages of the drone photogrammetry method in collecting individual tree crowns, as individual tree crown detection could deliver essential ecological and economic information. The referred accuracy for individual tree crown extraction is 79.2%. Only crowns that were clearly visible were selected and manually delineated on the image because the distribution of the true crown … Show more

“…TLS involves emitting laser beams to measure distances and create detailed 3D point clouds of surfaces and structures. Photogrammetry, on the other hand, relies on analyzing photographs to extract accurate measurements and generate 3D models [12]. Both methods offer complementary capabilities that enable the acquisition of high-resolution spatial data essential for geospatial mapping, urban planning, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure development.…”

“…Therefore, it is essential to study the distribution characteristics of tree species 2 4 In forest resource management and monitoring, 5 , 6 forest disturbance assessment, 7 and carbon storage calculation, 7 tree species classification and tree statistics are of great significance 8 . Stand density, namely the number of trees per hectare, is an important factor for evaluating site productivity and affecting the growth and development of trees, as well as the main factor affecting the structure and function of forest ecosystems; 9 , 10 it has irreplaceable practical significance for the sustainable development of forestry and the stability of forest ecosystems.…”

“…The reconstruction of indoor crime scenes can be facilitated by numerous technologies that are beyond photographs and handwritten notes. However, even with modern technologies, it is necessary to take into consideration the technical constraints, user-friendliness, cost, and time duration of data acquisition [11][12]. A recent study reported that leveraging on UAV technology will improve the effectiveness of crime investigation, facilitating access to otherwise inaccessible areas and expediting the retrieval of images [13][14].…”
