Individual student characteristics and attainment in pre registration physiotherapy: a retrospective multi site cohort study

Abstract: These findings suggest significant attainment gaps in pre registration physiotherapy education in this specific geographical region, particularly for non-White ethnic and disability groups. The association with assessment type challenges educators to look beyond a purely student deficit model to explore all factors that may lead to inequality.

“…In spite of women having historically outnumbered men in healthcare ( Öhman, Solomon & Finch, 2002 ; Quattrin et al, 2010 ; Vázquez Vega, 2010 ; Gomá Lanzón, 2014 ), our study reflects a fairly balanced distribution between male and female students (55% and 45%, respectively). This could be explained by a tendency towards increasing numbers of male students in the classrooms, as previously observed by Norris et al (2018) .…”

“…They followed a topic guide developed in relation to previous literature and discussed and agreed by the research team (Additional file 1). It included opportunities for participants to discuss their identity, positive and more challenging experiences in university and placement, garner their thoughts on the previous study that showed an attainment gap [10] and opportunities for enhancement. Open questions were intentionally used in order to avoid leading participants in particular apriori directions.…”

“…First is a recent study which demonstrates an attainment gap exists for pre-registration physiotherapy students with a disability, particularly those studying on pre-registration MSc courses [10]. While this study in physiotherapy mirrors a pattern in medicine, dentistry and higher education more generally [11], it did not explore potential reasons for attainment inequalities; other related literature in physiotherapy may give some indications.…”

“…Students from BME groups performed less well than their white British peers (Williams et al, 2015). Furthermore, BME students had lower attainment and greater attrition in a preregistration physiotherapy education within South-East England (Norris et al 2017;Ryan et al, 2017). Physiotherapy students from minority ethnic backgrounds were also awarded a significantly lower mark than their white majority peers in final clinical placements (although the differences are small) (Naylor, Norris & Williams, 2014).…”
