Individual patient data meta-analysis of diagnostic and prognostic studies in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive medicine

Abstract: BackgroundIn clinical practice a diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical history, physical examination and additional diagnostic tests. At present, studies on diagnostic research often report the accuracy of tests without taking into account the information already known from history and examination. Due to this lack of information, together with variations in design and quality of studies, conventional meta-analyses based on these studies will not show the accuracy of the tests in real practice. “…10 Individual participant data (IPD) metaanalysis is new to prognostic research. 11 In contrast to conventional metaanalysis, it uses the IPD of the original studies, thus enlarging the study population and increasing statistical power to detect subtle relationships. In contrast to aggregated data metaanalysis, it permits synthesis at an individual level, which creates flexibility in choosing outcome and subgroups.…”

“…We have recently completed a group-level meta-analysis of test accuracy measures of DTI for the diagnosis of ALS (14). However, individual patient data (IPD) meta- analysis approaches are generally considered superior to group-level approaches because more rigorous statistical methods can be employed, including covariate adjustment (15,16). Our study objective was to compare ALS patients who underwent DTI to healthy controls to determine diagnostic accuracy measures of FA using IPD meta-analysis techniques.…”

“…The investigators involved in this project are members of two GCO working groups; and, thus we are in positions to integrate knowledge translation as the data analyses progress and we examine preliminary findings [31]. The scholarly products developed as a result of the study (eg, manuscripts submitted to peer-reviewed journals, including open-access journals, presentations at conferences) will make theoretical and empirical contributions toward more effectively using the characteristics of sexual health clinic clients to predict STI.…”
