Abstract:We describe loss distribution measurement in a passive optical network (PON) using pulsed pump-probe Brillouin analysis. A preliminary experiment is demonstrated using a 32-branched PON constructed in the laboratory. We analyze the signal to noise ratio of this measurement and show that the method can realize a 25 dB dynamic range in 90 seconds (10000 times averaging), with an event location resolution of 10 m, and a fiber length identification resolution of 2 m.

W [10] zaproponowano wykorzystanie reflektometrii Brillouina do diagnostyki sieci dostępowej. Kluczem do poprawnej pracy tego układu pomiarowego jest uzyskiwanie z poszczególnych światłowodów dystrybucyjnych sygnałów powstałych z rozpraszania Brillouina o innej długości fali (innej częstotliwości).…”

Natomiast wykorzystanie reflektometrii ramanowskej umożliwia równocześnie klasyczny pomiar reflektometryczny i pomiar rozkładu temperatury -wielkości fizycznej mierzonej reflektometrem ramanowskim i będącej jednym z kluczowych monitorowanych środowiskowych parametrów infrastruktury telekomunikacyjnej.…”

“…Here, the optical fiber loss was set at 0.4 dB/km and the branching loss was 10.5 dB for an 8-branched splitter. And the measurement specifications were set at a fiber length identification resolution of 3 m and a fault location resolution of 15 m [2]. The probe and pump pulse powers were 13 and 16 dBm, respectively.…”

“…Recently, we have already proposed a novel technique based on Brillouin gain analysis with an end-reflected probe pulse for measuring the loss distribution of branched PON fibers. This method was used to measure the individual loss distributions of 32 branched fibers in a few minutes [1], [2]. The approach employs an end-reflection probe pulse, which yields at a test light cut-off filter described in ITU-T L.66 [3].…”
We present the monitoring of broken passive optical network branches using our proposed end-reflectionassisted Brillouin analysis technique, using weak end-reflection of −40 to −50 dB, which occurs at the broken fiber end.
“…Recently, we have presented a novel technology for loss monitoring in PONs called "end-reflection assisted Brillouin analysis", which distinguishes individual branches by using their length differences and end-reflection at the terminated end, and does not require any additional optical components to be installed in a network 4,5 . With this technique, we can analyze the Brillouin gain that occurs between a pump pulse and probe pulses reflected from the ends of branch fibers.…”
The in-service loss monitoring of branched fibers in passive optical networks (PONs) is demonstrated in the field for the first time. End-reflection assisted Brillouin analysis employing a frequency shift averaging technique compensated for the variation in the Brillouin gain profile of installed optical cables. Complete loss monitoring for individual branched fibers in deployed PONs was successfully achieved.
