Individual differences and day-to-day fluctuations in goal planning and type 1 diabetes management.

Abstract: Both individual differences and day-to-day fluctuations in diabetes goal planning are associated with diabetes management, highlighting the challenges of managing T1D in daily life. Youth in late adolescence with poorer EF may especially benefit from planning to attain diabetes goals on a daily basis. (PsycINFO Database Record

“…2,38,39 Among adolescents, the ability to prioritize diabetes correlates to improved blood glucose control. 40,41 Wiebe et al found that "diabetes goal planning" was associated with improved selfmanagement in adolescent participants, which in turn had a positive effect on HbA1c outcomes. 40 We were not able to compare clinical outcomes with qualitative findings for young people in this study; however, Duarte et al 12 demonstrated that young patients of CVCD were achieving average HbA1c levels similar to those of comparable age living in the United States.…”

“…These results are in line with Steinberg's (Steinberg, 2005) model of the importance of impulse control for the successful execution of adaptive behaviors across this developmental period. In fact, Wiebe et al (2018) found that individuals who generally planned well for how to achieve diabetes management goals were derailed when others interfered with diabetes management in daily life, but this was primarily true for those with lower EF (measured as a combination of cognitive and behavioral control skills).…”

“…Therefore, the current study tested the effect of planning both at the between-subject average level and within-subject daily level. Note that even though the main focus of this study was on examining the role of dyadic-related regulatory processes (i.e., DP), given the dearth of research on IP in people’s daily lives (for notable exceptions, see Berli et al, 2018; Wiebe et al, 2018) we also examined the daily effect of IP on people goal-related processes.…”
