Individual and environmental factors associated for overweight in urban population of Brazil

Abstract: BackgroundObesity is a significant global public health problem and the main cause of many chronic diseases in both developed and developing countries. The increase in obesity in different populations worldwide cannot be explained solely by metabolic and genetic factors; environmental and social factors also have a strong association with obesity. Thus, it is believed that the current obesity epidemic is the result of a complex combination of genetic factors and an obesogenic environment .The purpose of this s… Show more

“…Consistent with prior literature, we additionally found that exposure to homicide alone was not associated with obesity status and was inconsistently associated with BP status. The presence of at least 1 homicide in a community was associated with elevated BP; however, the relative effect was smaller compared with analyses examining overall violent crime rates.…”

“…In the most similar study published to date, Miranda and colleagues examined 1785 school‐aged children and found a stronger relationship between violent crime rates and measured BMI, compared with property crime rates . However, similar studies using objective measures in adult populations have typically examined homicide rates only, resulting in null findings . Our study distinguishes between 3 types of crime (violent crime, nonviolent property crime, and homicide), revealing notable differences in their associations with obesity and elevated BP.…”

“…This finding is similar to the findings of Mendes et al (2013) 47 among an urban population in Belo Horizonte in Brazil. In their study, Mendes et al found that even though the presence of parks/ public squares/places for practicing physical activity was associated with lower prevalence ratios for overweight/obesity, the relationship was not statistically significant.…”

“…Obesity or the accumulation of excess body adiposity is considered to be a complex disease of the diverse etiology (Binks 2016) and is a result of a complex combination of an "obesogenic environment" (Mendes et al 2013). This complex envi-ronment consists of genetic (Sitek et al 2014;Rosset et al 2016), socio-economic (Chung et al 2016;Kowalkowska et al 2016), nutritional (Gurnani et al 2015;Binks 2016) and psychological (Czegledi 2016; Kelley et al 2016) factors.…”
