Individual and contextual factors influencing children's effort in pediatric rehabilitation interventions

Abstract: Rehabilitation clinicians strive to encourage children's sustained effort within challenging practice conditions. Effort influences intervention success, yet it is rarely defined or measured. Effort can be conflated with individual factors, such as motivation and engagement, that might influence it. Contextual factors that likely impact children's effort, such as practice conditions and therapeutic interactions, are generally under‐described. Defining, describing, and measuring effort and its influencers is ne… Show more

“…Understanding predictors of function and activity, as well as the role of adherence factors, can aid in tailoring rehabilitation programs to individual needs (Hakiki et al, 2021;Steiner et al, 2021;Gangwani et al, 2022). Personal factors significantly impact rehabilitation outcomes, emphasizing the importance of individualized interventions (Gangwani et al, 2022;Levac, 2023). Moreover, standardized outcome assessments and well-defined rehabilitation pathways are essential for investigating treatment responses (Hakiki et al, 2021).…”

“…In pediatrics and disabled populations, demotivation and disengagement often lead to discontinuation of therapy, depression, and worsens patient outcome (Zihl, 2010;Zahi et al, 2016;Finn et al, 2018;Levac, 2023). This is especially true in therapeutic domains that require repetitive drills, such as motor, speech, and visual rehabilitation therapies.…”

“…Sense of purpose and perceived competence were facilitated through the acknowledgement of participants' roles as senior campers; they were given opportunities to support younger campers throughout the intervention. This intervention feature of increasing a sense of competence through the use of just right challenges for the adolescent population may be essential for motivation and goal attainment (LaForme Fiss et al, 2023;Levac, 2023;Morgan & Wells, 2010).…”
