Community reintegration of offenders is one of South Africa’s methods of rehabilitating offenders who have served a portion of their sentence in a correctional centre. However, overcrowding in the rural correctional facilities that have limited resources have exposed the correctional officials to enormous work-related challenges. This paper discusses the work-related challenges experienced by correctional officials at Rooigrond Correctional Centre, a rural correctional centre in North West Province in South Africa. This study employed a qualitative research approach and a descriptive research design to capture the challenges experienced by correctional officials during reintegration of offenders at Rooigrond Correctional Centre. Due to the different ranks of the correctional officials who participated in the study, a quota sampling technique was used to involve ten correctional officials in face-to-face interviews. Thematic data analysis was used, which showed that correctional officials experience a plethora of challenges which have an impact on work and personal levels. This paper makes significant conclusions and recommendations to improve the work-related experiences of the correctional officials in overcrowded, low-resourced rural correctional facilities.

Gender-Based Assessment in the Attitude Towards Social Values of the Pre-Service Teachers

Social values have become the guide of a person where it judges the action whether the action that has been taken is acceptable or not. This study will explore the attitude towards social values of the Pre-Service Teachers and determine if there is a significant difference in the attitude towards social values among the respondents when data are grouped according to gender. A total of 89 collected responses where 50 of them are female and 39 of them are male were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Pre-Service Teachers’ attitude towards social values in terms of their gender, results has shown that both genders reflect a result of somehow positive attitude towards social values with an average mean of 3.9164 and 4.0296 respectively. Moreover, both genders also reflect a somehow positive attitude with an average mean of 3.98. Overall, it is also revealed that gender does not affect the attitude towards social values of Pre-Service Teachers,in this sense, values education must be given importance in moulding the social values of the Pre-Service Teacher regardless of their gender whether they are male or female for the improvement of one’s social character as it will be beneficial in the cultivation of a harmonious school culture.

Deconstructing Collywood: A Conceptual Discourse on the Camerooness and Nigerianisation of Cameroon’s Video Film Industry

Since its inception in 2008, the Cameroonian video film industry (codenamed Collywood) has attracted mitigated criticism from both Cameroonian and foreign commentators. This criticism has partly bordered on the “camerooness” versus the “foreignness” of Collywood. While a number of critics are of the persuasion that the above-mentioned cinematic movement is not only nigerianised but one of the multiple vectors of the nigerianisation of the Cameroonian cinema industry, others instead think that, by copying the Nollywood model, Cameroonian cineastes may boost their film production and ultimately inundate the local market with movies that speak to local cultures and reflect the quotidian experiences of Cameroonians. Using three methods of data collection (namely secondary sources, unofficial interviews with cineastes and critical observations), this paper revisits the above-mentioned debate and some of the thorny issues that have stemmed from the emergence, evolution, and enculturation of Collywood. The paper aims specifically at examining the camerooness versus the nigerianess of the Collywood movement. The paper attains four principal objectives: in the first place, it critically examines the creation and vision of Collywood, as well as its representativeness of Cameroon’s socio-cultural dynamics. In the second place, it explores the extent to which Collywood may be said to capture the aspirations of Cameroonian cineastes. Thirdly, the paper critically examines the extent to which Collywood is a nigerianised movement and an agent of the Nollywoodisation of the Cameroonian film industry. In the last place, it shows how the idea of copying the Nollywood model may enable or has been enabling the success of Collywood. Among other findings, the paper argues that Collywood is majorly a Nollywoodised Anglophone movement. Its Nigerianisation is just an inevitable outcome of the globalization/transnationalisation of the Nollywood model.
