Indirect Spectrophotometric Determination of Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride

Abstract: A simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the quantitative determination of trace amounts of oxymetazoline hydrochloride (OMZ) was developed .The method based on the reaction of (OMZ) with Fe(III) in acidic medium. The librated Fe(II) coupled with potassium ferricyanide, the reaction needs heating for 25 minutes at 50 o C, to form Prussian blue which is more stable by adding 1ml of 1% ethylendiaminetetraacetic acid. The maximum absorption of the product was measured at 766 nm .Beer ' s law is obeyed … Show more

“…The effect of the amount of coupling reagent was studied by adding different volumes (0.3-2.5ml) of 2,4-DNPH reagent (1×10 -2 M) to the volumetric flasks containing 1.0 ml of OXMZ ( 250µg/ml) and 1.2 ml of the potassium periodate (1×10 -2 M), then the addition of 2.0 ml of 1.0 M sodium hydroxide and the volume is completed to 25ml with distilled water, the results are shown in Table (6). It is clear that the volume of 1.7ml of coupling reagent (1×10 -2 M) is the optimum amount because it gave the highest absorption.…”

“…(2) Different analytical methods have been used for the determination of OXMZ, such as spectrophotometric methods (3)(4)(5)(6)(7) , high performance liquid chromatographic methods HPLC (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16) , electrochemical method (17)(18)(19)(20) and flow-injection techniques (21)(22) . In this research a rapid, sensitive and simple spectrophotometric method for determining of OXMZ in pure form as well as in pharmaceutical drops formulations based on the oxidative coupling using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH) in presence of potassium periodate in basic medium.…”

“…Oxymetazoline is found in several nasal spray decongestants and ophthalmic drops. It directly stimulates α receptors on blood vessels supplying the nasal mucosa and conjunctiva, thereby producing vasoconstriction and decreasing congestion [8].It is absorbed from systemic circulation regardless of the route of administration [9] .OMZ is o cial in each of the United States Pharmacopoeia(USP) [10], the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) [11], and the European Pharmacopoeia [12].Reviewing the literature revealed few reports for OMZ determination ,viz, spectrophotometry [13][14][15][16][17][18], spectro uorimetry, , [19,20] gas chromatography [21,22], HPLC [10][23-28], ow injectionchemiluminescence [29,30],capillary electrophoresis [31], and electrochemistry [32,33].…”
