Indigestible fraction of edible marine seaweeds

Abstract: As dietary fibre constitutes only part of the non‐digestible components of plant foods, there is a general trend to extend the fibre concept to include all the main food constituents that reach the colon undegraded. In this study the major non‐digestible components of five edible brown and red Spanish marine seaweeds—Fucus vesiculosus. Laminaria digitata (Kombu), Undaria pinnatifida (Wakame), Chondrus crispus (Irish moss) and Porphyra tenera (Nori)—were determined under simulated physiological conditions by an… Show more

“…Pro-and prebiotics, e.g., Lactobacillus and dietary fiber, improve the bowel movements [26,27]. Seaweed is a rich source of dietary fibers such as arginic acid, fucoidan and laminaran [28]. in the numbers of bifidobacteria after wakame intake and a significant decrease in the amount of faecal ammonia during alginate consumption [31].…”

“…Thus, there was an interference effect that could not be eliminated by dilution or by using the standard addition method. Seaweeds have high contents of minerals, proteins and fibre, 24 compounds that are highly solubilized after in vitro digestion, 25,26 and these might by responsible for the matrix interference effect.…”
