Indigenous sheep breeds in Brazil: potential role for contributing to the sustainability of production systems

Abstract: Brazil has vocation for food production, both vegetable and animal, with the sheep industry having an expanding activity. However, productivity rates are often bellowing the possibilities of the country. Here, the roles the native breeds may develop in this expanding activity are described. Breeds considered are the hair breeds Santa Inês, Morada Nova, Somális Brasileira, Cariri, and Rabo Largo, and the wool breeds Bergamácia Brasileira, Crioula Lanada, and Pantaneira. “…In order to deal with the effects of globalization, urbanization, mechanization, increase in world population, global warming and climate change, it is urgently needed to transform our agriculture and livestock farming systems to more sustainable agriculture by taking into account the environmental considerations (fight against climate change, genetic characterization and monitoring of local breeds which are well adapted to the local environment, preserving and redeploying biodiversity endangered breeds) [1,2]. Moreover, this transformation aims also to provide a fair and stable income and good working conditions to farmers and could contribute significantly to social equity and local economies [3][4][5].…”

“…The efficiency of BR mobilization-accretion processes, to overcome undernutrition, is therefore recognized as an essential mechanism in ruminants [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. These processes contribute to maintaining the resilience of the flock under a fluctuating feed supply, such as in tropical [ 7 ] or Mediterranean regions, where seasonal forage availability is highly fluctuating.…”

“…Typically, Pantaneira sheep, named after the Pantanal ecosystem (a biodiversity hotspot in Midwestern Brazil), are kept in low-input grazing systems [10]. Currently, the sheep breeders' association in Brazil lacks an official description of Pantaneiro sheep [11].…”
